Think Outside - Employees First

Employees First

When I first started Falling Waters I didn’t think about employees. It wasn’t even on my radar. I was focused on getting customers and building the brand through marketing and creating relationships with vendors. I worked my normal 8-9 hours a day, and then spent afternoons, nights and weekends on everything else. It became apparent, very quickly, that I needed help. Are you in a similar situation?

When I think back on hiring my first employee and all the people that have come (and gone) since then, I have to pause and reflect. I realize that what has gotten me to this point is that my joy surrounding this business has changed.

Originally, I loved plants, design, building something from nothing. While I still love all those elements; what I love more is watching the people I employ find their own success and reach their full potential. A successful project is rewarding, absolutely… but seeing the growth of my employees over the years has brought me so much more satisfaction.

Over the years I have come to appreciate the sobering reality that, employees are the most difficult part of running a business. A little dramatic? Maybe. But I believe it’s the truth. Having employees will challenge you everyday to be better and to think outside the box. To create a place where people want to come and give you their best is truly rewarding.

Volume 8 outlines how we can keep our employees happy, engaged, and productive. We discuss hiring and firing too!
